Below Are Some Common Dental Emergencies

  • Toothache: Severe or persistent tooth pain can be caused by various factors, including tooth decay, infection, or a dental abscess. Rinse the mouth with warm water, gently floss around the tooth to remove any debris, and take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gum, as it can cause tissue damage.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth is completely knocked out, gently rinse it with water without scrubbing or removing any attached tissue. Try to place the tooth back into its socket if possible, but if not, store it in milk or a saline solution and seek dental care immediately. Time is crucial for successful reattachment.
  • Chipped or Fractured Tooth: Rinse the mouth with warm water and save any broken tooth fragments. If there is bleeding, apply gauze to the area. Use a cold compress on the outside of the mouth to reduce swelling. See a dentist as soon as possible.
  • Loose Tooth: Gently try to reposition the tooth back into its original position using very light finger pressure. Do not force it. Bite down gently to keep it in place and see a dentist immediately.
  • Lost Filling or Crown: If a filling or crown comes out, you can temporarily place dental cement, sugarless gum, or even toothpaste to cover the area and protect it until you can see a dentist.
  • Abscess or Infection: An abscess is a serious dental condition that requires immediate attention. It is often characterized by a swollen area of the gums, severe pain, pus drainage, and a bad taste in the mouth. An infection like this can spread to other parts of the body if not treated promptly.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Cuts, tears, or punctures to the lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue can be painful and may require immediate attention. Clean the area with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. If bleeding is severe or doesn’t stop, seek medical attention.
